Edwynn Houk Gallery presents Erwin Olaf : Stages, an memorial exhibition of seminal works of art from the multidisciplinary artist’s key series centered on the concept of performance, a recurring theme in the artist’s four-decade career. The exhibition Stages includes Olaf’s 1980s documentation of Amsterdam’s nightlife scenes, meticulously produced series such as Hope (2005) and Grief (2007) that dramatize social norms, and ongoing engagement with dance.

Summer is almost over. Don’t send us pictures anymore. Again this year, it was a pleasure to discover them everyday, a lot were publish but even more were not, due to space and time and our choice to keep sharing the news of the photographic world through the summer. Now, it is back to school and this season promises to be glorious.

One little-known part of the holdings of the Ann and Jürgen Wilde Foundation is the extensive collection of photographs by Alfred Ehrhardt (1901–1984), who was active as an artist, church musician, art teacher, and maker of “Kulturfilme” (scientific, educational documentaries). Ehrhardt took up the camera in 1933 after being dismissed from his teaching post at the state art school in Hamburg, as the newly installed Nazi government’s cultural policies came into effect.

Phillips presents in London today their sale Photographs & Helmut Newton: Provocateur. The section dedicated to Helmut Newton (lots 121-170) comes from Simon de Pury’s exceptional collection. The noted auctioneer, curator, and collector was a close friend of Newton. And if a lot of the iconic photographs are of course present, a substantial number of much lesser known images and variants of classics give a fresh flavor to the sale. These are some of the ones we decided to highlight today.

This is a quite rare occurence. On May 14, Christie’s will present their 21st Century Evening Sale with artworks by artists such as Brice Marden, Georgia O’Keeffe, David Hockney, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Claude Monet. And among these exceptional artists, we will also find Diane Arbus with a magnificent print of the photographer’s iconic Identical Twins. This is a rare foray of “classic” Photography in a sale always awaited in the calendar and often dedicated exclusively to Art with a capital A.
