Nicolas Torre III on Monday assured the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) that including the number of arrests as a means of assessing the performance of police officers will not lead to abuses. Speaking as the guest of honor at the CHR’s flag-raising ceremony in Quezon City, Torre said he decided to pay a visit to the agency to explain his recent remarks in a press briefing on the day of his appointment as PNP chief.

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government on Monday advised residents, especially those with respiratory illnesses, to mask up when going out due to the poor air quality index monitored in some parts. Susano Road, Maligaya Elementary School, Kaligayahan Elementary School, Lagro High School and Road Payatas controlled disposal facility were identified by the city government as having “very unhealthy” air quality.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit Southern Leyte on Thursday morning followed by a magnitude 5.4 quake in Zamboanga del Norte, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.
