A new Alzheimer's study has found that a blood test can help doctors determine if there is an accumulation of proteins in a patient's brain. Scientists say clumps of protein can disrupt brain signals and become amyloid plaques and tau tangles that are thought to build up in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. The blood test, called Precivity A-D-2, measures how much amyloid and tau a person is likely to have in their brain.

A new study has found that at-home screening tests for colon cancer are not as effective in detecting pre-cancerous polyps compared to a colonoscopy. Researchers focused on the fecal immunochemical test or FIT in the JAMA Open Network study. The test provides people with a small brush to gather a toilet water sample from a bowel movement. It is then tested for hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of cancer.

Officials say calls to the suicide and crisis lifeline, 988, have increased dramatically since the number was created two years ago. According to its website, the 24/7 lifeline provides "free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones."When a person calls, they are connected to a trained counselor who can address their immediate needs. People can also text the lifeline and or use its online chat services.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say there is evidence that the COVID-19 virus has hit high levels in at least eight states, including Connecticut. The evidence is based on testing done at wastewater treatment sites. Connecticut is considered to have "high viral activity" based on testing completed at five wastewater sites in the state. Officials tell News 12 the latest subvariant called FLiRT is driving up cases.

A new Gallup Poll has concluded that an estimated 72 million women in the U.S., more than 40%, skip or delay important doctor's appointments and recommended health screenings. Poll findings show that 60% of women said they have a hard time marking their own health a priority. T.J. Hills , author of " Sex, Drugs, Babies and Breast Cancer ," tells News 12 she hopes her book inspires women to dive into the details of their own health.
