In Sarasota, Florida, a purple theatre with a scalloped concrete roof sits amid landscaped coastal parkland overlooking the Sarasota Bay. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall opened in 1970; its design (and singular hue) was inspired by a shell that washed up on the shores of the Sea of Japan and was retrieved by Frank Lloyd Wright’s widow, Olgivanna. Said shell can be found in a vitrine in the theatre’s foyer, a relic of the architecture’s origin story.
