In the city's Montclair hills district, Paddington Cafe is now serving homemade dumplings for dining in or take-out. The Huang family hand-makes five kinds of dumplings - pork with cabbage, chicken with corn, vegetable, shrimp with chives and egg, beef and tomato - in their new Dumpling House restaurant at 2105 Lincoln Ave. in Alameda.
Montclair Elementary to mark 100th anniversary May 2

A Montclair landmark will observe its 100th anniversary on May 2. The Centennial Celebration at Montclair Elementary School will be a community-wide event, including an invitation to students past and present. The program is called "it takes a village," and indeed, that's the ethos on which the school was built. The Montclair Women's Club, The Montclair Dads Club, Montclair Improvement Club and the Piedmont Avenue School orchestra all participated in the dedication ceremonies in March 1926.

Montclair's Ken Betts Chevron station has reopened for gas in daylight hours only after last week's rash of car-ramming break-ins across Oakland. The early-morning March 11 incident at Betts Chevron - one of the city's five gas station burglaries in three days - knocked out the electrical panel. The car used in the crime also damaged the building when it rammed through the front of the service station.

A once-elusive bird is making more than a few East Bay appearances these days. Bald eagles are nesting near reservoirs and elsewhere - Valle Vista on Canyon Road in Moraga, Lafayette Reservoir just a few miles away, Corica Park Golf Course on the city of Alameda's Bay Farm Island and Lake Chabot in Alameda County. Seeing these magnificent creatures doesn't take an eagle eye. Birders at the places mentioned above train scopes and telephoto-lens cameras on eagles perched high in the trees.
