It's been nearly a week since construction equipment started rolling into a stretch of Mountaindale Road near Shades Creek in Birmingham. Kat Lawson lives on the road, and her backyard faces where the new Shades Creek Greenway will be. "I have work trucks parking behind my driveway," Lawson said. The trail will link existing trails along the creek from Irondale to Mountain Brook, but because Lawson said it is in her literal backyard, she's not too happy.

Glen Adams is Homewood's first city manager, and just over a month into his new job, he said he has his priorities set. "With development coming in and requirements for development, there's always fear of change, and I'm just getting on top of it," Adams said. The Creekside development became closer to a reality after Homewood's planning commission recommended it to the city council Tuesday night despite some pushback.

Two people were taken to the hospital after a Friday evening apartment fire in the Southside neighborhood. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said crews got the call just before 6:30 p.m. to the apartment building on Cullom Street. When they arrived, crews found fire and smoke coming from the second floor. Once firefighters got in to put the flames out, they learned about those inside who were trapped.

Ralph and Rebecca Mims spent all of Sunday trying to salvage 15 years of memories from their mobile home that was picked up from its foundation and dropped feet away during Saturday’s storms. “Everything you work for is gone at one time,” Ralph said with tears in his eyes.
