Sandhill cranes have once again chosen to raise a family near us this spring. Their raucous calls have dissipated lately and I assume their silence is part of a natural drive to remain hidden from those that would do them harm. This season a mated pair is raising a single youngster. It’s currently half the size of its parents and is well protected. How do I know this? The family is never separated and moves about with the young offspring sandwiched between the two adults.
