ORLANDO | Father William Burns received his chalice as a gift from longtime friends Deacon Ron and Ann L’Huillier, in honor of his late mother, Lorraine. On a visit to the seminary his daughter, Sarah, accompanied him to a silversmith in the nearby town in Massachusetts where his mother had lived. “The chalice really drew me because of the symbolism on it,” Father Burns said.

ORLANDO | As Bishop John Noonan ordained Fathers John Triolo and William Burns, he reflected on the unique time in which the men begin their priesthood — in the wake of a newly elected Pope, during the season of Easter, and in the Jubilee Year of Hope. He told the men it is a unique honor.

ORLANDO | By age 14, the Colombian guerillas threatened Gerardine H.’s family. Her father and brother received death threats. After a tumultuous year, living with relatives and trying to plan for their safety, her parents moved the family to Ecuador where they applied for refugee status in the U.S.Now age 17, the Oak Ridge High School graduate is on her way to a career in nanotechnology with the help of the Sid Román Law Hispanic Student Scholarship.

OVIEDO | On May 17, University of Central Florida Catholic Campus Ministry alumni gathered for their second retreat to reconnect and refuel their faith. Catholic Campus Minister (CCM) Kimmy Zeiler is a product of the ministry’s early years, a group that is still going strong. “My experience of being a student here was that I met a community for life and met a spiritual family who have continued to journey with me through the highs and the lows of my life,” Zeiler shared.

ORLANDO | Father Phillips Mills was vesting for the celebration of Mass when staff members of St. James Cathedral in Orlando rushed in exclaiming, “White smoke! White smoke!”That exclamation indicated that the conclave of cardinals in Vatican City had selected a new pope. It would be another hour before the world knew his name – Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the Order of St. Augustine would become Pope Leo XIV.

DELAND | Several months ago Embry Riddle Aeronautical University approached Donna Wilkins, a teacher at St. Peter School in where she is also STEM Club director, about applying for a grant to “Build the Moon.” The school won the grant and with little more than a month to accomplish the task, St. Peter students completed the challenge and garnered recognition.
