A.C.E. Academy, a K-8 charter school in Huntersville, is preparing to launch a $3 million expansion to include preschool students ages 3-5. The expansion will be financed with a private education bond, Laila Minott, co-founder and superintendent, told QCity Metro. Why it matters: A.C.E. Academy currently serves about 430 students, 92% of whom are Black or Hispanic. Sixty percent qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police launched a homicide investigation on Friday after finding a person dead in South Charlotte. CMPD did not release the victim’s identity or what might have led to the killing. In a statement, the department said CMPD officers found the victim dead with a gunshot wound in the 5100 block of Cherrycrest Lane. Officers had gone to the location shortly before 8 a.m. to conduct a welfare check.

A Durham-based nonprofit will open a regional hub in Uptown Charlotte to assist small business owners, nonprofits and promote economic development. The hub, operated by the National Institute of Community Economic Development, a Black-led organization, will be located at 916 W. 5th Street.
