The expansion will be financed with a private education bond, Laila Minott, co-founder and superintendent, told QCity Metro. Why it matters: A.C.E. Academy currently serves about 430 students, 92% of whom are Black or Hispanic. Sixty percent qualify for free or reduced lunches.

    Charlotte-Mecklenburg police launched a homicide investigation on Friday after finding a person dead in South Charlotte. CMPD did not release the victim’s identity or what might have led to the killing. In a statement, the department said CMPD officers found the victim dead with a gunshot wound in the 5100 block of Cherrycrest Lane. Officers had gone to the location shortly before 8 a.m. to conduct a welfare check.
