Alberto Cutone, Kennebunk sophomore: Seeded third in the state singles tournament, Cutone advanced to the semifinals before falling to No. 2 Matt Morneault of Falmouth in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Cutone later avenged that defeat with a third-set tiebreaker victory in the Class A South final, a 3-2 loss to Falmouth that ended Kennebunk’s season at 13-2. George Cutone, Kennebunk senior: For the third time in four years, Cutone won the state singles tournament, and he did so in dominant fashion.

His exit from high school tennis did not go as well as he had hoped, because the Kennebunk team he spearheaded for four years came up a point short in the regional final. Even so, George Cutone leaves behind one of the finest legacies in Maine schoolboy tennis history. Cutone (pronounced coo-toe-knee) won three singles titles in his four years at Kennebunk High. He led the Rams to two Class A state championships and two more appearances in the Class A South final.

Madelynn Deprey is one of Maine’s finest high school athletes. A junior at Caribou High, she has scored 1,000 points in basketball and earned All-State honors. She uses her quickness and agility to great effect on the tennis courts as well, and this spring helped the Vikings win their first state championship in 29 years, in the Class B final. That is where she met Sofia Mavor, a senior at Yarmouth High. Living far from southern Maine in Aroostook County, Deprey had never seen Mavor play.

Kira Gregor, Cony freshman: Gregor went 11-1 while playing No. 1 singles in team competition, losing only to Gardiner’s Haylie Peacock. Seeded ninth in the state singles tournament, Gregor advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Sofia Mavor. Sofia Kirtchev, Falmouth sophomore: As the fourth seed in the state singles tournament, Kirtchev reached the semifinals for the second year in a row.

Jun. 12—LEWISTON — The design is a simple one, created by senior Wiley Schumacher. A tennis ball with a word — Shardlow — inside the seams rests on the ground above a simple message beneath: Love All. Schumacher and his teammates at Yarmouth High have worn that logo on their left sleeves all season, in memory of their highly-respected coach, Bill Shardlow, who died in January of a stroke.

Tennis state finals have moved indoors at Bates. So far, Yarmouth boys beat MDI 4-1 and Caribou girls beat Yarmouth in Class B. In C, Fort Kent girls rallied to beat Waynflete 3-2. Waynflete boys playing Orono now. Class A matches to come, but only 4 cts available. @VarsityMaine
