A brilliant opening manoeuvre from Oscar Piastri has won him the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the lead in the Formula One drivers’ championship. It is the first time an Australian has led the drivers’ championship for 15 years, following his manager Mark Webber in 2010. At turn one Piastri nipped inside Max Verstappen, who had begun the race on pole, resulting in the Dutchman driving off the road to claim the lead.

As he basked in the tactical triumph of masterminding Lyon’s 2-1 win over his former Arsenal team in Saturday’s first leg of their Uefa Women’s Champions League semi-final in London, he was asked if his experience enabled to him to block out the ‘noise’ around the subject. There was a pause and a whispered aside to the club’s press officer before he spoke.

A four-goal first-half blitz has secured Melbourne City their A-League Women premiership title defence and completed an unbeaten regular season. City thrashed Perth Glory 5-1 on the road, taking an immediate grip on the match with goals from Taylor Otto and Bryleeh Henry in the opening six minutes. Though Glory pulled a goal back with a 12th-minute penalty from Susan Phonsongkham a second Otto goal restored City's cushion after 26 minutes.

Mitchell Starc has won the heavyweight showdown between Australian fast-bowling teammates with his 5-35 propelling Delhi Capitals to a five-wicket victory over a Sunrisers Hyderabad team captained by Pat Cummins. Starc dismantled the top order of Sunrisers' normally formidable batting line-up, dismissing Travis Head among a trio of early wickets in Visakhapatnam. He then returned to mop up the tail, dismissing Sunrisers for 163, and claiming his first five-wicket haul in the Indian Premier League.
