On May 16, two big events were held across town for non-profits that impact so many on our community, one for infants (A Safe Haven for Newborns) and the other for seniors (United HomeCare with its Claude Pepper Awards Luncheon). Happily, both events were a major success thanks to our generous South Florida community.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s conducted its spring new member installation on May 7. Second vice president Kristina Jackson, the club’s membership chair, was assisted by club president Arely Ruiz in conducting the ceremony that included candles and gifts for all. The 11 new members installed were Yolanda L. Gonzalez, Joyce Stokes, Joelle Saliba, Lina Pinzon, Nadya Gribanova, Irene Martinez, Lee Harper, Julie Fowler, Cristina O Alvarez, Roxy Collazo and Helen Tarbutt.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) ballroom was transformed for the club’s “Passage to India” themed Mothers Day Tea with stunning décor. The affair, a fundraiser for the club’s free children’s dental clinic, offered guests a chance bid on a variety of great silent auction items while enjoying drinks and Indian cuisine as an appetizer plate followed by the usual tea sandwiches and dessert trays.

The General Federation of Women’s Club’s Coral Gables Woman’s Club hosted Col. Catherine “Cady” Coleman (USAF ret.) on May 2, #nationalspaceday. Col. Coleman — an American chemist, engineer and former NASA astronaut — is a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and a six-month expedition on the International Space Station (ISS), logging over 180 days in space.

It was only nine years ago that Iris Garcia had a vision to empower survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. This entrepreneur and cyber tech businesswoman founded The Women Voice Network (WVN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, that began as an awareness campaign out of her studio in Doral. It has grown into a vibrant community of hope, education, and economic empowerment for hundreds of women and girls helping them rebuild their lives.
