ROUND PRAIRIE — Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association and other local and state agencies responded to a natural cover fire just off Interstate 5 at the northbound 113 exit around 4:30 p.m. Friday. A press release from the association said due to the intensity, location and rate of spread, the fire was caught at 3 acres. The fire burned near structures and residents were warned, but none were threatened or damaged.

RIDDLE — Ready to start off the summer? The Riddle Sawdust Jubilee plans to officially kick off the summer in south Douglas County this weekend. The weekend will kick off Friday afternoon with a farmer’s market and food trucks opening at 3 p.m. in the Shamrocks Parking Lot, at 222 Main St. The night will feature with the ax throwing contest at 6 p.m. at Riddle High School, 147 Main St. according to the schedule online.

ELKTON — Elkton Community Education Center will use the first full day after this year’s summer solstice to host Blooms and Butterflies. The one-day event on Saturday aims to kick off the summer in Elkton, celebrate the blooms and the butterflies returning and raise funds for the Elkton Community Education Center. “Our pollinator garden that we just gave a facelift to last year is blooming like mad,” Deborah Gritton, co-executive director of the center, said.

WINCHESTER — Juan Valadez of Myrtle Creek said he originally planned to go straight into Oregon State University, but due to financials and the location of Umpqua Community College, he ended up attending the Winchester-based school for two years. "I feel like I finally reached the milestone that I've been working towards," Valadez said.

MYRTLE CREEK — Joe Weiss said he's been spending his Father's Day weekends at the Tri-City Horsemen's Arena for over 20 years now. "I rode so many saddle broncs and and probably the oldest guy still fighting bulls at my age in the freestyle, 65 years old," Weiss said. Weiss said he's thankful he is able to move this well at his age. While his daughters and grandchildren might want him to stop, he keeps deferring one more year.

United Community Action Network (UCAN) in Douglas County will begin Pouring Generosity in July and August to fundraise for the food bank services it offers. Val Gordon, program manager for UCAN Food Bank, said the eighth year of the event invites community members to support the Douglas County Emergency Food System by visiting participating local businesses. “I would just encourage everybody go out, give it a try,” Gordon said. “See what this winery is all about.

Summer weather means summer break and Roseburg schools officially ended school Wednesday for students. Sunnyslope Elementary School held the traditional last day of school festivities, complete with water games, a splash tower, corn hole, tic tac toe, snow cones, sack races, tug of war, tire races and much more in the area outside of the school. New this year was a dunk tank, with teachers sitting and waiting for students to drop them into the water.
