This trajectory analysis, performed on a general population-representative birth cohort, is the first to incorporate combined parental report and dispensed medication data to derive trajectories of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema up to the age of 13 years. Nine trajectories were identified, with highly distinct patterns and differential composition of parental report and dispensed medication.

This study showed poor agreement between questionnaire and national register data on allergic rhinitis diagnosis and treatment. National registers were found to be incomplete, as they did not provide data on either over-the-counter medication or children treated for allergic rhinitis in primary care. This level of disagreement supports the use of data from well-validated questionnaires to provide an insight into allergic rhinitis.

Evidence abounds on the independent roles of social class and smoking in relation to obstructive airway diseases, but data are sparse on the impact of their interaction. We evaluated whether and to what extent social class and smoking interact in relation to risk of respiratory diseases in adults.
