    Earth’s average temperature on Wednesday remained at an unofficial record high set the day before, the latest grim milestone in a week that has seen a series of climate-change-driven extremes. The average global temperature was 62.9 degrees, according to the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, a tool that uses satellite data and computer simulations to measure the world’s condition. That matched a record set Tuesday, and came after a previous record of 62.6 degrees was set Monday.

    INDEPENDENCE — A panel discussion is set for July 14 in Independence to look at the notorious 150-year-old Bender murder mystery in Labette County. The panel discussion, “Unearthing the Bloody Bender Mystery,” is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 14, at the Independence Civic Center, the Parsons Sun reported. The event is free and open to the public.

    CHANUTE — Neosho County Attorney Linus Thuston will not prosecute a couple accused of killing a Parsons man. The Kansas Attorney General’s Office will instead prosecute Clint W. Nibarger and his wife, Kimberly J. Thomas Nibarger, accused of killing Dakota A. Patton.
