Nine years after an initial prevalence study in this population in Tanzania, as well as after a significant increase in low fluoride piped drinking water, skeletal fluorosis (SF) is still an issue, as evidenced by the emergence of new cases. Although the etiology of SF is complex and multifactorial, fluoride exposure through drinking water appears to be the largest contributing factor, with high levels of fluoride found in well and borehole water sources.

BENZONIA — Betty Scott remembers altering one of her sister’s old skirts into a pair of shorts when she was a kid as her first project turning something old into something new. Scott, 80, learned how to sew in a home economics class in school, and she grew up with her mother and grandmother fixing and altering hand-me-downs throughout her childhood. She used her sewing skills to fix up her daughters’ clothes when they were growing up.

TRAVERSE CITY — When FIRST Robotics mentor Dan Riehl thinks about his team’s run at the state championship, Murphy’s Law — anything that can go wrong will go wrong — comes to mind. “Murphy hit us pretty hard at states,” Riehl said. Riehl is a mentor for the Titans from Traverse City West Senior High School. Through the ups and downs of the state tournament, the students on the Titans remained in high spirits and other teams still saw the value in their robot and chose them to compete, he said.

TRAVERSE CITY — The state attorney general called northern Michigan’s largest school district “one of the most impressive” she has visited in terms of school security. Dana Nessel toured West Middle School in Traverse City on Thursday afternoon and viewed the safety measures in place there. Afterwards, Nessel pointed to the building’s external doors, security cameras and the district’s communication with law enforcement as primary examples of best practices when it comes to school security.

TRAVERSE CITY — A community task force dedicated to school safety has scheduled dates for in-person and online community input sessions on a report on their findings and suggestions. Safer Kids, Safer Schools is a task force made up of 31 community members, including law enforcement, teachers, students and local counselors, that met seven times between October and January to discuss gun violence and school security and generate a report on potential local solutions.
