There are nearly 1,000 international students from 91 countries at Lehigh, and about 800 students traveled abroad in the 2023-2024 academic year, according to Lehigh data reports. The university is celebrating these students, and global education, this week through International Education Week. Karin Fischer, a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education, gave a keynote address on Nov. 19 in the Linderman Library as part of this week-long celebration.

Kayleen Tran grew up watching her parents drink tea, and her job at a boba shop in high school showed her how the beverage can foster community. Tran, ‘26, joined Lehigh’s Tea Club her first semester, and when the club put out a call for executive board applications, she knew she wanted to get involved. She said she applied for the secretary position, but when the board decided to disband the next year, she became the president instead.

A group of workers chat as they stuff bright pink makeup sponges into cardboard packaging. One of them packs a group of six sponges into a box, labels it and sends it off to a nearby pallet. They are part of just one of the many workstations inside Via of the Valley’s building. Located at 336 W. Spruce St., this organization is home to a small group employment program.

Lehigh’s Rathbone Dining Hall received a four-star certification from the Green Restaurant Association this summer, becoming one of 14 universities in the country, and the only one in Pennsylvania, to attain a rating this high. Every year, the association inspects restaurants and dining facilities and assesses their environmental sustainability. They offer four levels of certification based on eight categories, including energy and water usage, chemicals and pollutants, and waste production.

They carefully attach lights to the grid hanging from the ceiling, positioning each one just so. After positioning the lights, Amodei climbs back up to run the power cables and connect them to the lighting board that controls them. They take a step back.

When Lehigh put out a call for ideas on how to improve student retention, marketing professor Laura Smarandescu was quick to start crafting a proposal pairing mental health with art. She partnered with Gretchen Meyerhoefer, the coordinator for the College of Business, and Julie Miwa, a biological sciences professor, to create Harmony Within.

Kathy Olson has been watching “Jeopardy!” her whole life. She’s wanted to be a contestant on the show for nearly as long. On April 3, Olson checked off a bucket list item by competing in a taping of “Jeopardy!” that aired on May 15. The Lehigh journalism professor said she started applying to compete on the show after graduating college. The required qualifying test is offered once a year in cities across the United States. She took it four times without advancing further in the process.

For graduating seniors, commencement weekend is an important milestone in their educational journey. For the class of 2024, it’s even more special. Because of COVID restrictions in 2020, this year’s undergraduate commencement weekend will be the first time many seniors walk in a traditional graduation ceremony. The Student Senate is responsible for selecting the graduate and undergraduate commencement speakers.
