Loud explosions heard in Sheffield on Sunday morning were part of a planned chimney demolition, South Yorkshire Police has confirmed. Several chimneys at a site on Clay Wheels Lane were demolished at about 08:00 GMT and the noises were "nothing to worry about," a force spokesperson said. One resident, who did not know the demolition was due to take place, said her "whole house was literally shaking" and the sound was "worrying".

A 120-year-old Little Bo Peep costume has been restored to its former glory ahead of a new exhibition. The Fashion at Play exhibition, opening in March at Lotherton Hall, will explore the history of children's fashion from the 1600s to the present day. Leeds Museums and Galleries' curator of costume Natalie Raw said the costume tells a unique story about children's tailoring in Leeds.

A hospital has begun testing hundreds of babies for genetic conditions as part of a "world-leading" study into rare illnesses. Midwife Georgie, who is expecting her first baby in April, was the first person in Leeds to be recruited for the genetic study and took the first sample from a baby. The study will test babies for more than 200 rare genetic conditions and could enable people to benefit from earlier diagnosis and treatments.

A Dutch-style roundabout, which gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians, has opened in Sheffield. Work on the roundabout - the UK’s second Dutch-inspired roundabout, after the first was opened in Cambridge in 2020 - began in April 2023 and was due to be completed in October the same year, but the project was delayed. Finally unveiled on Monday, the roundabout, at West Bar, included an anti-clockwise dedicated cycle lane and additional pedestrian crossings.

Twenty-two people, including a two-year-old child, were stranded in a forest overnight after Storm Darragh brought down trees and power lines, blocking their exit. They were trapped in 8,000-acre Dalby Forest near Pickering, North Yorkshire, and some had to spend the night in the cafe at the Forestry England-managed site. Andy Widdowson, head of recreation in Yorkshire for Forestry England, who co-ordinated the response from Pickering, said it had been a tiring 24 hours but everyone was safe.

A memorial service is being held on Sunday to remember three lifeboatmen who died in a storm 70 years ago. Jack Cammish, Jack Sheader and Francis Bayes died when they fell overboard while escorting fishing vessels to Scarborough's South Bay on 8 December, 1954.
