Marine Debris and Plastics Program Laura Ludwig joins Sunday Journal to talk about the cleanups, as well as more about the Outer Cape research institution. From entanglement rescues for whales to critical studies on sharks, she says the Center has been working hard to bridge the gap between humans and the creature that call the Cape coasts home.

    BARNSTABLE – A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s cancellation of AmeriCorps funding, freeing up money again for the local Barnstable County branch. AmeriCorps Cape Cod lead Misty Niemeyer said they are happy with the return, but they now have doubts that a grant they applied for this summer will come through. The program helps clean up local environments, staff shelters during winter storms, and more.

    BARNSTABLE – The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce is getting ready for its 17th annual Quahog Day, featuring the region’s own Punxsutawney Phil-esque weather forecasting mascot; Doug the Quahog. Chamber CEO Paul Niedzwiecki says it’s a day of fun as they cut the ribbon on Cape Cod’s summer season at the Blue Water Resort in Yarmouth from 4 to 6 pm June 20th. Niedzwiecki also gives an update on business forecasts for the summer as reservations fill in.

    FALMOUTH – Cicadas are out in full force and making quite the buzz as summer gets closer. Barnstable County officials say Brood XIV (“fourteen”) periodical cicadas appear once every 17 years, emerging in huge numbers on Cape. Towns like Bourne, Sandwich, Mashpee and Falmouth have reported noticeable increases in their signature loud buzz. The mid-Cape is also forecasted to see growing numbers of cicadas throughout June. Their noise can reach up to 100 decibels, about the same as a lawnmower.
