There might not be a standout race at Musselburgh on Saturday, but it’s a really appealing card from a punting perspective, and that is particularly true for the races shown live on ITV. All are handicaps with at least eight runners, which means the each-way terms are favourable for punters, and there is no reason not to sit down in your favourite spot with an Easter egg or two and enjoy the action. It will be even better if you can find a few winners, too.

This 2m½f contest presents a different test for stayers because races over this sort of trip are often poorly contested with single-figure fields, but that has rarely been the case for this valuable event. There were 13 in last year's line-up and 14 have been declared this time, but many of these horses will have done the majority of their racing against fewer rivals.

It is a pleasure to look down the list of winners for this prestigious race as one star jumps out after another. From Dancing Brave in the 1980s, Guineas winner Haafhd in the 2000s and Derby hero Masar in the 2010s, the roll of honour is illustrious, so who wins this season? The first thing to say is there doesn’t appear to be a star among them, and it will be a surprise if a Classic winner emerges from the race.

The Tote are putting up a £75,000 guarantee for the Placepot pools at both Newmarket and Cheltenham, but the best card is at Newmarket and it could pay to focus our attention there. The opening 6f handicap (1.50) is competitive, but it’s hard not to be lured in by Battaash’s half-brother Al Misbar, who is racing off a mark of just 86. The Dragon King is next best. The Wood Ditton (2.25) is a real guessing game with 15 newcomers lining up.
