RegionsA new ballot system, which has been added to control angler numbers on the Ōhau River, is now open to those wanting to enter a "lottery" draw. Central South Island Fish & Game has established the ballot system in response to rapid growth in the number of anglers fishing on the Ōhau River between lakes Ōhau and Ruataniwha.

The pub, which was built in 1872, went on the market last year, prompting community members, concerned they might lose their township altogether after losing the Waikaka Store a few years ago, to put their heads together and come up with a plan to buy it.

It will be all hands to the pump, or at least the tap, when the Waikaka Hotel officially opens today. It’s taken a while to sort it, but the Waikaka community has guaranteed it will have a hotel in the town from now on. The pub, which was built in 1872, went on the market last year and community members concerned they might lose their township altogether, after losing the Waikaka Store a few years ago, put their heads together and came up with a plan to buy the local hotel.

RegionsNorth OtagoIt was a bittersweet day in Glenavy last Saturday when the annual Salmon Run charity event held its 10th and final run near the banks of the Waitaki River. Chief organiser Chris Paul said the event raised $1500 towards improving the playground at Glenavy. Totally candid about how the race initially started, Mr Paul said he stole the idea from the Wanaka duck race.
