Premier Danielle Smith, the great disrupter of Alberta politics, is now disrupting the federal scene. At least, that’s the perspective of those who don’t know Smith and haven’t followed her career as United Conservative premier the past two years. Smith is in fact all about disruption and even chaos to gain power and influence at both the provincial and federal levels.

When Finance Minister Nate Horner tabled Alberta’s provincial budget in the assembly on Thursday afternoon, he and every other government MLA should have been wearing a neck brace. And maybe two for Premier Danielle Smith. This is a government suffering from brutal whiplash. After spending the past two years promising Albertans she would not run a deficit budget, Smith has delivered one with a $5.2 billion cavity (on total spending of $79 billion).

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith likes to call herself an “innovator.” That might not be the first word that comes to mind for many Albertans thinking about her “innovative” ideas for an Alberta Pension Plan, or restructuring the healthcare system, or overturning the management of AIMCo, the government’s $170-billion Crown corporation. But it’s certainly the word Smith uses to describe how she is blurring the lines between the United Conservative Party and the United Conservative government.
