One is dead and likely to be proclaimed a saint some time, and the other is alive and performing miracles now. They both come from the same country. One was a pope, the other is a politician. On matters of economics one was wrong, and one was right. On matters of theology who’s to question a pope but I think the politician (who though a Christian is toying with converting to Judaism) may actually have the edge.

"[T]his election…is a sliding doors moment for our nation," declared Peter Dutton, and maybe he was right, and in ways he didn't quite intend. Sliding doors refers to the 1998 British film of the same name. The premise is that a seemingly minor event or decision can dramatically alter the course of a person's life. The election results suggest the sliding doors analogy was accurate, at least as far as the Liberal Party was concerned.

Post election there is always jockeying to write the narrative. Frequently these are either complete fantasy, or “faction” – fiction based on fact – giving psychological support to the narrator, or manipulating listeners to the narrator’s advantage. One theory that is gaining traction is that Donald Trump caused this result.

The big test awaits! How, where and when to see the four marathons in the Commonwealth Games on Sat, Jul 30. Will the men's 26.2 mile record from 1974 be broken or will Brum's route be too hilly?! @birmingham_live @CityLife_Bham @MyJQ @birminghamcg22 https://t.co/15mVd8IoDB
