FLANDREAU, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On Thursday, a status hearing for Joseph Hoek, the man accused of killing Moody County Chief Ken Prorok back in February of 2024, took place at the Moody County Courthouse. Hoek is facing one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated alluding. Hoek’s trial is currently scheduled for October 14th after being rescheduled multiple times.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - According to the U.S. Travel Association, International visits to the United States are dropping, and South Dakota is not immune to that trend. International visits to the US fell by 14% from March of 2024 to March of 2025. State officials remain optimistic but if this trend continues, the state and the country are looking at quite an economic hit.

(Dakota News Now) - A long overdue step for national security is finally coming to fruition. “We will make sure that it is as seamless as possible and that travelers will get to stay on their intended itinerary, but we are telling people that this law will be enforced, and it will allow us to know individuals in this country, who they are and if they’re authorized to travel,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On Friday, Attorney General Marty Jackley announced another case of fraud. The state’s highest law enforcement officer said this time, the private sector is involved, and the state’s Medicaid program has been targeted. Forty-eight-year-old Pierre Native Sharon Monson is accused of stealing more than $500,000 by defrauding the program, meaning, if found guilty she could be serving up to 42 years. The charges stem from May 2018 to January 2024.
