At the 221st session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held on 14 April 2025 a momentous decision was taken to proclaim 9 February of each year as World Greek Language Day. The motion to promote the celebration of this date as one of the international days marked by UNESCO was supported by 87 Member States – a record number – but with one notable exception: Australia.

On Monday, UNESCO’s executive board designated February 9 as “World Greek Language Day,” coinciding with the anniversary of the 1857 death of Dionysios Solomos, Greece’s national poet. Georgios Koumoutsakos, Greece’s UNESCO delegate, called it “an international recognition of our language’s timelessness, universality, and contribution to humanity’s cultural heritage—a day of joy and pride,” in a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
