On May 1, 2025, the singer-songwriter world lost one of its most irrepressible and beloved free spirits when Jill Sobule died in a house fire while on tour in Minnesota. Sobule, 66, was best known, in her own words, as a “two-hit wonder”: for “I Kissed a Girl,” from 1995, the first overtly gay-themed song to reach the Top 20 (13 years before Katy Perry’s song of the same title); and “Supermodel,” featured in the Clueless movie soundtrack.

You might attribute that to his ancient violin: the 1742 “ex-Wieniawski” Guarneri del Gesú (which takes its name from the famous 19th-century Polish virtuoso and composer Henryk Wieniawski), on extended loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

On a recent tour, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal stopped by the AG studio to play some music and talk about her new album, Slowly it Dawns. In this trio of songs—“June Baby,” “Yes Man,” and “15%,”—Canal shares not only her talents as songwriter, but as a vocalist and performer. Despite performing in a small room for an audience of just three (me; her tour manager; and her accompanying guitarist,Callaghan Kevany), Canal put her entire heart and soul into playing these songs.
