The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday approved Mayor Randall Woodfin’s $591 million budget, despite some concerns. Birmingham council member Valerie Abbott threatened to delay a vote over her concerns that the city isn’t enforcing its housing codes. An F-word on a banner at a booth for the City of Birmingham’s homeless outreach contractor ruffled some feathers recently at the East Lake Farmer’s Market. “They came to East Lake United Methodist Church and set up large signs that had the F-word on it,” said council member Hunter Williams. “The farmer’s market is supposed to be a family-friendly event. They had both signs and a tent that had the F-word written across it.

Wayne Lewis, a founding member of the R&B group Atlantic Starr, has died at the age of 68. He died June 5, according to a social media post by the band on June 7. No cause of death was disclosed. “It’s with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis on June 5, 2025,” Atlantic Starr posted on its Facebook page.
