    SCOTTVILLE – Holton played tough, and nipping at the Mason County Central girls basketball team’s heels all night, but the Spartans finally earned a 54-41 West Michigan Conference Rivers Division victory Friday night in Scottville. The visiting Red Devils had the score tied three times in the first quarter, but the Spartans twice took the lead, once on a 3-point basket by Mallory Miller and then late when Jessica Peterson got inside for a hoop, making it 12-11.

The Mariners opened the season with a victory over Farwell, but then suddenly began to tread water, and listing heavily with a six-game losing streak that all but eliminated them from contention for the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division title.

    VICTORY TWP. — With the game tied at the end of the first period, and the Lakeshore Badgers co-op hockey team scuffling a bit, Ludington junior Levi Young decided he’d had enough. Taking control of the situation and lifting the Badgers on his back, Young exploded for three straight goals to start the second period and Lakeshore rolled from there.

    MANISTEE — Manistee broke away from a tight game against Fremont with a big third quarter and won its fourth straight, 54-35 at home Friday night in a West Michigan Conference Lakes Division matchup. Kaden Kott, held scoreless in the first half, hit for 11 in the third as the Mariners outscored the Packers, 19-6 and mounted a 38-19 lead. Although undersized, the Mariners are getting better at rebounding and against the Packers were only outrebounded, 30-23 on the night.
