The Term ApologeticsThe term apologetics has nothing to do with “apologizing” for anything. Typically we think of an apology as an admission of wrongdoing and a request for forgiveness. But presenting an apologetic is almost the very reverse of apologizing. An apologetic is rather a defense of what might appear to be wrong but actually is right. Rather than requesting forgiveness, an apologetic seeks to persuade someone that no forgiveness is needed, despite a wrongful accusation.

Layers of MeaningThe parable of the two sons is Jesus’s longest story, and it’s remarkable in so many ways. I always keep finding new things in there. The setting in Luke’s Gospel is that it’s told to tax collectors and sinners and to Pharisees and scribes. Pharisees and scribes are people you’d expect to know the Bible very well, particularly the scribes whose job it is to actually copy out the Bible, and sinners—you wouldn’t expect them to know the Bible quite so well.

God Knows AllJesus is unique. He is God’s son. He’s God himself. And he’s described in John 1 as “the Word.” In the beginning was the Word. Now think about this. He invented humans. He invented language. He invented human language. So when you allow that, it’s hardly surprising that he should know such a lot. And I think that just explains why he would have this.

A Secondary QuestionIt seems that a common mind is behind the stories of Luke 15–16, and multiple lines of evidence suggest that the same mind is behind many other sayings attributed to Jesus. The storyteller of Luke 15–16 must be a gifted communicator, thoroughly familiar with the Old Testament and with the thought world of Jews in Palestine. The simplest hypothesis by far is that the storyteller is Jesus.

What Makes a Genius? Over the years thousands of people have been described as geniuses.1 Aristotle (384–322 BC), Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), and Albert Einstein (1879–1955) are among the more famous ones. But the term genius is almost never applied to Jesus of Nazareth.2 Probably about two billion Christians would claim to follow his teachings, which is more than follow the teachings of any other person in history.

Copying, Canonizing, and TranslatingWe get our Bible, first of all, because God has chosen to reveal himself to humans. If it weren’t for that first step, of course, there would be no Bible. But from there, then we could talk about the incredible work of humans that God has used to bring us the Bible. And the first step of that, of course, is God choosing to speak through human authors. He inspires the authors of the Bible to write what’s in the Bible.
