I'd just completed a degree in Classics and, despite its historical inaccuracies, ‘Gladiator' won its way to my heart through the sheer brilliance and emotional resonance of its storytelling. After decades in the wilderness, swords and sandals were once again, even if only fleetingly, box office gold. The Roman epic is always going to be a big and expensive production.

‘The Punch and Judy Man' is the last big-screen outing for Tony Hancock as a leading man. Released in 1963, only two years after ‘The Rebel', it has all of the hallmarks of a waning star. It's a bleak film for any genre, let alone a comedy. It is filmed heavily on location in the distinctly unglamorous seaside town of Bognor Regis. In some of the scenes, it is raining heavily. The whole thing feels like a wet bank holiday weekend.

The 1961 British film ‘The Rebel' brought together the combined talents of a partnership that defined comedy in the Swinging Sixties: star Tony Hancock and writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. It's shot in colour, which is an unusual medium for Hancock, who had worked his way up from radio star to having his own black and white television series. A short-lived spate of activity on the big-screen followed. It would not sustain, and ‘The Rebel' is Hancock's best film in a starring role.
