On Wednesday the ALP cleared the last real economic hurdle before Saturday’s election. Inflation remained steady at 2.4% and underlying inflation fell below 3%. Because Peter Dutton had made such a big deal about that measure, he now looks bereft of an argument. A good campaign really should be able to see what is coming.

The debate on defence ignores that Australia already spends more than it should. During this election campaign, both major parties have tried to make it very clear that concerned about our spending on defence. Over the past term, the Labor Government increased funding by $50 billion, increasing total spending to 2% of GDP. It is forecast to continue to grow to 2.3% of GDP by the mid-2030s.
