    There were early signs that the March GDP figures were not going to be good. To start with, the Bureau of Statistics’ new measure of household spending that covers about two-thirds of all household spending had already revealed that spending for the quarter was flat compared with a 1.6% jump in December quarter last year. So household spending was worse.

    While the May election result was remarkable for the low vote share going to the major parties, it was just the most recent of a very long trend. In the 1975 federal election, minor parties and independents combined accounted for only 4% of the primary vote. In 2025 – 50 years later – this has increased to 34%, the highest ever recorded since the emergence of the two-party system.

    The unhinged criticisms to changes in superannuation make more sense when you realise that Australia’s entire tax debate is geared to ensure rich, wealthy people and companies get richer and wealthier. The government’s proposal to reduce the tax concessions on earnings on super balances above $3m has been the ultimate case in point.
