Layne Doherty earned varsity letters in four sports at Belmont High School: lacrosse, field hockey, skiing, and track and field. But the first was her best, and the 5-foot-7 midfielder found a collegiate fit at Division II Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. Currently a sophomore, the 2023 Belmont High School graduate owns four goals and two assists for the Purple Knights (3-7, 0-4 Northeast 10), who look to close the season with momentum.

The fastballs reach 90-plus miles per hour, home run blasts exceed 350 feet, and it’s not impossible to catch a future Major League Baseball regular right in Brookline. Fenway Park may sit just an MBTA Green Line stop or two away, but there’s some high-quality baseball even closer to home. Belmont High School’s baseball roster appears young and unproven with just two senior starters. In reality, the Marauders like the mix of experienced players they have regardless of class. Last year, the Marauders went 11-9, narrowly qualifying for the MIAA Division 1 tournament after missing it entirely in 2023. The No. 36 seed out of 39 teams, the Marauders fell to No. 29 Peabody in the preliminary round. They hope for a tournament return this spring, Middlesex League title, and more.

Belmont High School girls lacrosse is a program on the rise. Two straight trips to the MIAA Division 1 tournament and a markedly higher seed put the Marauders in the conversation as a top program in the Middlesex League and statewide. This spring, a group of experienced midfielders and defenders looks to mesh with a new goalie and attackers to keep the momentum.
