The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has said it may use new powers to investigate AWS and Microsoft following a 14-month investigation in the UK cloud services marketplace. In provisional findings published earlier today, the CMA said that competition in the sector was deficient, with cloud customers faced with both a limited choice of providers and technical barriers that prevented users from easily switching between services.

The UK government has proposed strict new regulations on the permissibility of ransomware payments by private companies and public sector organisations. Under the new provisions, a ransomware payment ban would be implemented among all public sector bodies, while any payments made by private firms would have to be officially sanctioned.

The majority of UK businesses intend to outsource their cybersecurity operations to a third party, a new survey has found. According to the poll of 1,762 C-suite executives by Logpoint, 28% of respondents are confident that their IT security team will belong to a third party – adding to the 52% of businesses in the UK that already outsource this function.

Metro Bank has been fined £16m by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority for failing to deploy effective anti-money laundering (AML) technology. According to the regulator, the high street institution failed to filter over 60m transactions for money laundering risks – an oversight attributed to a software error that failed to log transactions on the day a new account was set up. The FCA added that up to £51bn worth of transactions were overlooked over the four years the bug went unpatched.

Halliburton has said it lost $35m from a systems breach in August. The incident disrupted and limited access to key systems at the oil services company. The breach, which also led to the exfiltration of some of Halliburton’s data, was subsequently revealed to be an attempted ransomware attack. It is unclear whether the $35m loss was the cost involved in repairing Halliburton’s damaged systems or a ransom paid to recover lost data. Tech Monitor has approached the firm for clarification.
