(Divebomb)Oh man, I never say no to a Confessor reissue, even when I’ve probably reviewed the damn thing before, but there’s just never enough praise I can spill on this band. Uncontrolled collects the three demos that got the band signed to Earache Records back in the day for the release of their mighty Condemned album, (1988’s The Secret, 1989’s Uncontrolled, and 1990’s Collapse).

(Grand Central Publishing)What a treat this one is, legendary thrash guitarist Gary Holt giving his story from the glory days of Exodus to the dark era that followed to the rise from the ashes in his time in Slayer and Exodus’ rebirth. There’s a lot to unpack in this book, which is very tightly held together thanks to the writing of former BraveWords contributor Adem Tepedelen, and which also features a foreword by Kirk Hammett.

(Transcending Obscurity)Debut full-length here from Port Coquitlam, BC’s Crown Of Madness, coming at us from the extremely quality Transcending Obscurity Records way over in India. It took me a little bit to get my footing on this one, which I like: opener “Visions From A Past Life” felt sort of gothic black, which made me start losing interest pretty fast, but then “Sovereign Blood” lays down a blasting, sideways stumble through the Gorgutsian catacombs, and I’m all on board.

(Dark Descent Records/Me Saco Un Ojo Records)Denmark doomy deathsters Phrenelith have slowly and slimily been making a name for themselves in the grimy underground, here on album number three hopping over to the mighty Dark Descent, a suitable home for their sound. “Noemata” actually sets the tone nicely as a lumbering instrumental opening, and “Astral Larvae” grinds through the swamps with an admirable Immo thump.

(Cursed Blessing / High Roller)Man, let’s give a moment of loud to respect Canuck thrashers Sacrifice, still with the OG lineup, still releasing incredible albums like this, the band taking their time with things, yes—six albums since 1986—but it’s worth it. Opener “Comatose” is outrageous for a bunch of guys with more salt than pepper, biting hard like Kreator, thrashing furious, memorable, tight and proficient.
