The Calgary-based company uses an automated variable rate irrigation system that allows growers to maximize yields, minimize workloads and conserve water. Gouw Quality Onions said on the company’s website that it saved three inches of water on four quarters of land last year using the system.

A southern Alberta egg producer who had been jailed for missing a court date for violating the provincial laws governing egg production has passed a premises inspection by Egg Farmers of Alberta. Henk Van Essen said an inspector only spent a few minutes inside his operation before coming back out and telling him he was in full compliance.

Inflation remains a concern in the American economy, says a a senior macro markets strategist with Rabobank. Christian Lawrence told the recent Alberta Beef Industry Conference in Calgary that inflation will remain a concern in the United States, regardless of how the tariff trade war plays out. The U.S. targets a two per cent inflation rate, but it has not yet lowered to that level.

Haley Catton, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at Lethbridge, says producers need to focus on conserving beneficial insects while simultaneously managing pest insects. “There are two basic rules: don’t hurt them, and try and help them,” Catton told the Farming Smarter conference and trade show in Lethbridge last month.
