It was a day rich with political symbolism. On 27 June this year 151 MPs presented themselves for induction into Thailand’s new parliament following the May national election. All were from Move Forward, the insurgent party that stormed home to claim more seats in the House of Representatives than any other party. The symbolism lay in the fact that 27 June is the anniversary of the day in 1932 when Thailand promulgated its first-ever constitution.

The last time voters headed to the polls in Thailand was in 2019, following five years of a repressive military dictatorship. Thai voters spoke nervously of their democratic aspirations and allowed a military-led government into power. Now, after four years of a functioning parliamentary democracy, Thai voters have roared. With nearly all votes counted in Sunday’s parliamentary election, they have resoundingly rejected the junta and its successor military-proxy parties.

Another former general, and Prayuth’s former key backer, Prawit Wongsuwan, is also running for prime minister, while Prayuth himself has formed a rival military-allied party. This division has raised hopes that the generals might be tossed out of power and of the country’s possible return to stable electoral democracy. But for many reasons, it is far too early to hand the election to Pheu Thai, and far too early to predict who will eventually become prime minister.
