May 10-Vivian Zurheide's two-run single in the first inning took down a 27-year-old school record and launched the Southwestern Piasa Birds over a South Central Conference softball hurdle on Friday. The Birds put up five runs in the first, Grace Strohbeck took a shutout to the seventh and Southwestern defeated the Greenville Comets 7-1 in a SCC game in Piasa. The Birds, who last won the SCC in 2018, are 13-3-1 and 6-0 in the conference. The Comets are 18-6-1 and 5-3 in league play.

May 10-The Jersey Panthers scored a run in the top of the first inning and never trailed while defeating the Roxana Shells 5-3 in a nonconference baseball matchup on Friday at Roxana Park. Gage Carey went the distance to earn the win for Jersey, which won its third in a row to reach .500 at 13-13. Roxana, which lost to the Panthers 5-4 in Jerseyville on March 22, drops to 18-8-1. Jersey's seven hits came from seven different Panthers. Jersey broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third inning.
