The American League East primarily built its reputation on the backs of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, who were in a tier by themselves for over 15 years. From 2003 to 2019, the Yankees made the playoffs 13 times, while their rival was close behind with 10.

    The Blue Jays might have one of the hottest lineups in the majors but it was no match for Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez. Suarez and a pair of relievers combined to shut out the Jays, the fifth time they have been held without a run this season and the first since May 27 versus Texas. Suarez was so good that the Jays didn’t put a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning in what turned out to be an 8-0 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

    Alejandro Kirk may as well cancel whatever plans he had during Major League Baseball’s all-star break because the 26-year-old is well on his way to punching a ticket to Atlanta instead. Kirk has been to one all-star game before and he’s almost certain to attend another considering his standout performance in the first half. After signing a  in March, the product of Mexico has responded with his best season to date.

    Entering spring training, the Blue Jays appeared to have a top-heavy roster that would require standout contributions from big-name stars to have any shot at contending. Through the first 2 1/2 months, it has been the role players who have stepped up to save the season. The surging Jays are getting value from someone new just about every night.
