The Blue Jays did what they needed to do by completing a four-game sweep against the overmatched Athletics over the weekend. Now they have to find a way to keep the positive results going versus a much more difficult opponent in the Philadelphia Phillies. Throughout most of this season, the Jays have taken two steps forward followed by two steps back. They have never been more than four games above .500 and never more than four games below.

There aren’t too many noticeably bad teams in the American League, so the Blue Jays need to take advantage whenever one comes to town. For the second consecutive night at the Rogers Centre, they did just that. The Jays have won three consecutive games, while the floundering A’s have lost all but one of their last 16 as a season of misery continues.

Anthony Santander‘s first season in a Blue Jays uniform went from bad to worse on Friday afternoon when he was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. Santander initially sustained the injury crashing into the outfield wall to make a catch against the Los Angeles Angels on May 8. Entering the year, the Jays were projected to have a strong starting five, but behind that group there didn’t appear to be much depth. One setback might have thrown the entire staff into disarray. Scherzer hasn’t pitched since, and yet the Jays somehow found a way to piece it together. They still have their fair share of problems, including in the rotation where José Berríos and Bowden Francis have struggled at times, but the fifth spot hasn’t been the black hole it was once assumed to be.

The Blue Jays are one-third of the way through the regular season and there have yet to be any signs they are on the verge of becoming a top contender in the American League. The Jays, who reached the 54-game mark during Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to the Texas Rangers, have been perfectly average with a 26-28 record. Too good to be considered bad, not nearly good enough to be a serious threat to the teams at the top.

Jays were among teams in on Scott. Tough to compete with Dodgers these days, on field or off

The way the last 14 months have played out is just cruel and unusual punishment to #BlueJays fans. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like it.
