If we like something or find it useful, we might become like a new religious convert. We may extol the virtues of this new workout program or diet or religion we’ve found as the be-all and end-all. This worked for me, so it’ll work for you, we think. Or, if a little bit is good then a lot will be even better.

We’ll find an increased sense of gratitude and contentment, and we’ll experience an ease and lightness in all we do. The Dao will begin to infuse our lives. Now this isn’t to say we won’t have challenging events in our lives. The change won’t necessarily come in the events of our lives, in the things that happen to us, but in how we experience and respond to them.

    My five favorite translations of the Daode Jing, in no particular order. They each bring something different and worthwhile to the table, and are quality translations. One thing they have in common is historical context. None of these play fast and loose with the translation or seek to remove the text from its cultural and historical context and treat it as a book which exists in a vacuum, as so many English language “translations” have.
