When Kate White received a "very large" gas bill for her empty Sydney home, she was shocked. News stories about energy prices going up meant she had accepted she would be paying higher prices for her hot water. But this time she paid particular attention because her Summer Hill home had been vacant for months while undergoing renovation. She called her gas provider, AGL, and discovered the bill had been estimated. Ms White then manually entered her meter reading, and the bill more than halved.

A Federal Court judge has ordered Bruce Lehrmann to pay costs of a higher order than typically seen in defamation cases, but also declared there were "no real winners" in the multi-million-dollar legal battle. Justice Michael Lee found last month that, on the balance of probabilities, Mr Lehrmann raped Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in 2019, meaning Network Ten and Lisa Wilkinson ultimately won on a substantial truth defence. Mr Lehrmann has always maintained his innocence.

Forbidden from working, mother of two Raffat Fatima had no money or family to help come up with a plan to keep her children safe. Instead, she turned to legal aid, and a caseworker soon became her guardian angel. "We had nowhere to go so we ended up staying in her house for a month," she said. "I could never pay her enough for all of this, such a big help".

Many key questions remain following the costs hearing in Bruce Lehrmann's failed defamation battle against Network Ten and Lisa Wilkinson. The estimated multi-million-dollar figure Network Ten could be compensated for was not aired in court, neither was Mr Lehrmann's financial status, although the idea that he could become "bankrupt" was floated. However, Justice Michael Lee has determined some issues, telling the court he was "keen to get this all off my plate".

At least two police officers have been injured as large crowds clashed with authorities following the stabbing of a bishop during a live-streamed church service in Sydney's south-west last night. A 15-year-old was arrested over the stabbing of three people at the Assyrian Orthodox Church, Christ The Good Shepherd Church, in Wakeley on Monday night.
