South Carolina’s series finale against Ole Miss started eerily similar to the game that took place the day before. On Friday, Hayden Federico battled Jake McCoy to a full count to lead off the contest. Federico would launch a pitch over the right-field fence later in the at bat to give the Rebels and early 1-0 lead. On Saturday, Mitchell Sanford led off for Ole Miss, while Jarvis Evans Jr. started on mound for the Gamecocks.

Consecutive wins have been hard to come by for South Carolina during the 2025 season. After going on a nine-game winning streak to begin the campaign, the Gamecocks have won consecutive games only twice since then. They won four six straight contests against Davidson, The Citadel, Morehead State and Georgia State in early March; they later followed up a midweek win over Presbyterian with a series-opening win over Mississippi State to kick off the month of April.

Positional versatility has become an increasingly valuable asset in the modern iteration of college football. Running backs catch passes out of the backfield, and linebackers drop into coverage along with members of the secondary. In some unique cases – like that of the most recent Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter – players can even contribute on both offense and defense. A more common form of football “double duty” is having a player be a team’s placekicker and punter.
