AbstractIntrinsic neural timescale (INT) is a resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) measure that reflects the time window of neural integration within a brain region. Despite its relevance to cognition, brain organization, and neuropsychiatric illness, physiological artifacst—which can impinge on the validity of fMRI findings—have not been systematically considered in INT estimation. Two such artifacts, related to head motion and respiration, pose serious issues in rs-fMRI studies.
