1. IntroductionHan Yu 韓愈 (768–824), born in Heyang 河陽 (today Mengzhou 孟州, Henan 河南 province), was a prominent literatus in the Tang dynasty and an influential figure in the history of Chaozhou 潮州 culture. In his lifetime, Han Yu propounded Confucian orthodoxy to maintain and restore the ruling order of the Tang court. In the fourteenth year of Kaiyuan 開元 (819), Han Yu submitted a memorial entitled Jian ying fogu 諫迎佛骨, also known as Lun fogu biao 論佛骨表, to Emperor Xianzong 憲宗.
