Have you ever (intentionally) walked a shade over six miles in a single stretch? I did. This April’s Cooper River Bridge Run — the 48th annual event — was a highlight of my vacation. For those of you who don’t know, it is the third most popular 10K run in America…and among the top ten road races in the country. I and at least 35,000 close friends crossed a two-mile long bridge into Charleston from Mt. Pleasand for the the right to say., “I got over it!”Many ran. I walked.

I know. I know. I don’t do it often enough…especially when the people you work for literally give it to you. So…I went home. I was looking forward to seeing the usual sights like the Waterfront Park’s Pineapple Fountain (above) that has become Charleston’s welcoming symbol. Many of you may not know that the pineapple represents hospitality. There are also the iconic and quaint restaurants and the clean fresh air all around. I did have to wait a bit to get to this point.

This month — June 23rd to be exact — I will begin my 39th year in broadcasting. It’s hard to believe I’ve come this far for this amount of time. I say that because when I went to college at Clemson University my declared major was…chemical engineering. That was not my destiny I would later discover. A friend of mine who worked at Clemson’s campus radio station invited me up and gave me an opportunity to read the news…and I was hooked.
