A celebration of Asian culture that once drew thousands to the shores of St. Paul’s Lake Phalen each summer is back after a four-year hiatus. Organizers say the Dragon Festival went dark due to board turnover, financial challenges and the anti-Asian climate during the pandemic. It’s back this year as a one-day festival with its traditional dragon boat races, lion dances and food vendors, along with new features, like a beer garden, to help offset the event’s cost.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services recently removed a Hmong translation on its Facebook page after receiving complaints from Hmong community members and academics that the translation was confusing and riddled with errors. Bee Vang-Moua, director of the Hmong language program at the University of Minnesota, shared the department's post on her Facebook account, pointing out problems with the Hmong translation.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services recently removed a Hmong translation on its Facebook page after receiving complaints from Hmong community members and academics that the translation was riddled with errors. The department posted an image with text and a short caption on Facebook on February 5, reminding Minnesotans with Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare to update their address and other personal information to avoid interruptions in their insurance coverage.

For Arwin Chan, Lunar New Year means letting go of the old and welcoming in prosperity for the new year. It’s a time when she goes out for a big family dinner or simply catches up with friends. “This is the time that people will try to go back to have a big celebration with their family and show their gratitude,” Chan said.
