YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Ultra Q, a band with a direct link to rock royalty, will headline Federal Frenzy on April 26. The California-based act is led by Jakob Armstrong, who is the youngest son of Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. The 24-year-old Armstrong is the principal songwriter and rhythm guitarist. He is joined by his lifelong friends, Enzo and Chris Malaspina, who are brothers, on lead guitar and drums, respectively; and Kevin Judd on bass.

Ben Folds will come to the Robins Theatre in Warren on Sunday for a 7 p.m. concert that promises to be one of the best of the year in the Mahoning Valley. The indie-rock artist’s piano-based music ranges from playful to deep. He’s still known for his 1997 hit “Brick” and his great 2001 album “Rockin’ the Suburbs.” But there is so much more. On his most recent rock album, 2023’s “What Matters Most,” Folds expands on his precocious keyboard style. He also shows off capacity for fun.
‘Shredded,’ by Valley Filmmaker, Now Available to Stream

“Shredded,” a movie written and directed by Adam Michael of Youngstown, is now available to rent ($2.99) or buy ($9.99) on Amazon.com and other streaming sites. The drama stars Youngstown actor Makayla McIntosh and Anthony Dain of Columbus, who play characters going through major health challenges. The movie, which clocks in at 1:46, was shot largely in New York City. It got its world premiere in April 2024 at Main Street Theater in Columbiana (now known as Columbiana Arts Theater).
Record Store Day Will Feature Live Music

More than 250 stores nationwide will take part in this year’s Record Store Day celebration Saturday, April 12. They will offer a selection of anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of the 371 exclusive titles specially made for the day. Because the whole point of RSD is to drive interest in the neighborhood independent record store, the releases – on vinyl – are available only at participating stores. They can’t be purchased on a website.

There are a few good reasons for the course’s popularity – other than rock music is more fun than algebra. For starters, the students learn a musical format that they’re not only interested in but can continue to pursue after they graduate. They also pick up some performance skills along the way. Most importantly, their teacher knows what he’s talking about.
Café at The Butler to Reopen with Fresh Outlook

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The restaurant-coffee shop at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown closed about a month ago but will soon reopen with a new name and operator. Looma Café is slated to open in early April, says Zach Conkle, who will operate it with his fiancé, Taylor Stillerman. The previous operator closed the café earlier this year. The dining room has a skylight and a glass wall that bathes it in natural sunlight.
Opera Western Reserve to Present ‘Faust’ in September

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Opera Western Reserve will present its annual production – Charles Gounod’s “Faust” – much earlier this year. The opera will be performed Sept. 20 at Powers Auditorium. In previous years, OWR’s annual productions always took place in November. The opera company announced the title and the date Thursday. Denise Glinatsis Bayer, president of OWR’s board of directors, said there are two good reasons for the change in date.

SHARON, Pa. – After 14 years in business, Donna’s Diner permanently closed Monday afternoon. A traditional 1950s-style railroad car diner, the restaurant had become a landmark in the city’s downtown. It had been for sale for several months, but a buyer had yet to be found. The owners, Karen Winner Sed and the Winner family, still hope to sell the business to someone who will keep it open as a restaurant.
