FORSYTH COUNTY — The budget deficit facing the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is larger than officials thought, and jobs will have to be cut, the school district said in an announcement released Thursday evening. The district hired HIL Consultants to gain a full picture of the district’s current financial landscape after learning in March of an $8 million shortfall in the fiscal year ending June 30 and a projected $16 million shortfall in the coming fiscal year.

A consulting firm has found that overspending beyond state-provided funding for personnel has driven much of what has put the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in a $30 million hole, the school district said in an announcement release Thursday evening. GUILFORD COUNTY — Guilford County Schools stands to lose $9 million in federal grant funds supporting mental health services for students because the Trump administration says the grants promote diversity, equity and inclusion. The U.S. Department of Education notified recipients of its School-Based Mental Health Services Grant Program in an April 29 letter that it’s canceling $1 million in funding at the end of 2025.
