A year ago, business in Jamestown was not booming. The venerable Jamestown Hotel, the National Hotel, the bars and restaurants in both hotels, and The Willow Saloon had recently closed. Tourism ebbed, and remaining owners of businesses in downtown Jamestown have been concerned about perceptions of a downturn in the local economy. More recently, The Service Station restaurant and beer garden on Main Street closed its doors in March.

One of the most famous and beloved steam locomotives at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park — Sierra No. 3 — is expected to return to action soon, following a 1,472-day inspection required by the Federal Railroad Administration. Sierra No. 3 has appeared in so many movies and television shows it is viewed by many railroad historians and movie historians as a high-profile, world-famous piece of the past for Tuolumne County, for the Hollywood film and TV industries, and for their shared histories.

About 1,000 people attended the Sonora Pride event Sunday at Mother Lode Fairgrounds, said organizers with CalPride Sierras, the Sonora-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves the LGBTQ+ community in Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne counties.

A San Francisco-based company called BurnBot recently conducted a demonstration of a remote-controlled prescribed burning machine at Jordan Meadows southeast of Groveland, in an area that is part of the ongoing China Ridge fuels reduction project in the Stanislaus National Forest. It requires a minimum of five people trained in prescribed burning and running BurnBot equipment to burn with the machine, said Curtis Durnall, a BurnBot specialist based in Placerville.

Ski season was still booming last weekend at Sonora Pass. In the 11 springs and summers I’ve been up to the top of Sonora Pass, I’ve never seen so many skiers and vehicles parked on the roadside shoulders and turnouts.
