My son is a new medical student at Cardiff University and had to answer this very question multiple times at interviews for which I helped him practice. It’s one of those deceptively simple questions with a whole world of meaning. Medicine is a vocation, it’s about helping society, making a difference, my grandmother was ill once and I was moved by the care she received, we have a duty to help the less fortunate and I find the human body fascinating in all its complexity. Blah, blah, blah. Words.

The rates of certification of vision impairment do not reflect the number of people living with certifiable vision impairment. This study adds previously unreported population level data regarding the unmet need for certification. Given this unmet need, consideration should be given to primary care certification in the rest of the UK, and in Wales, the potential to expand the scope of conditions.
