Sixty-four student teams from forty-six schools across the US and Canada are squaring off in multiple qualifying rounds to join the “Final Four” in-person championship in Laguna Beach, California, and to win awards for best agreement mark-ups, all while learning to advocate their (made-up) clients’ positions.

John J. McCann, former chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section (1992–1993), passed away on March 13, 2024, but his work as a lawyer and leader of the Business Law Section (BLS) lives on. Most notably, McCann was instrumental in his leadership role in creating a new publication for the Business Law Section: Business Law Today (BLT).

The American Bar Association Business Law Section is proud of its library of quality legal titles that serve the business law community. However, there are a handful of BLS titles that are true “classics”—that is, they are the go-to sources for the legal practitioner; they strengthen their branding with each new edition; and they sell in the thousands. For the ABA’s Business Law Section (BLS), the appointment of Mike Flowers as chair of the Section (1999–2000) was significant in many ways: Not only was he a talented lawyer who excelled in advising clients on business matters, but he was also the first African American attorney to lead the Section. Flowers attended his first BLS meeting in 1985 and, for him, it was an exciting and opportune time to become involved in the ABA.
